Indian Football Players

Notwithstanding India's present status as minnows of Asian football, there was a time when the Indian team did commendably well in international competitions. All that success and glory were made possible by the skills of a bunch of talented players who shone in the national jersey.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the golden age of Indian football, India regularly participated in the Olympics and twice clinched the Asian Games gold. It was an era when the likes of P. K. Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, Jarnail Singh and Sailen Manna represented the national team.

Despite playing barefoot, often in inhospitable overseas locations, the Indian stalwarts were able to hold their own against better-equipped adversaries. The deficiency in football-gear was compensated by sheer hard work and determination.

Here is a list of famous Indian football players:
  • Chuni Goswami
  • P. K. Banerjee
  • Sailen Manna
  • Peter Thangaraj
  • Jarnail Singh
  • I. M. Vijayan
  • Baichung Bhutia

Hi this is simon samuel, son of Olympian Footballer Mr. Simon sundararaj of 1960 Rome Olypics. Dont know how people are setting their standards to publish these type or websites without the names of legends from the south. My father is almost ignored from these websites as well as from the Govt. of India. He scored the max no of goals for India at Rome Olympics. But still his names were diminished for the names of Chuni Goswami, P K Banerjee and all..All these were members of same team but preference for bengalis and others were given. I strongly condemn these partiality. If you need clarification please go to Kerala and say Mr. simon and the people will tell how Football was made in Kerala by my Father. I am Proud to be his Son.

Also my deepest condolence to the former Olympian Mr. Peter Thangaraj Sir. My Father were one of his close friends and he recollects his memoirs of his late friend.

People like me who are born and brought up in Thanjavur, played football for schools and colleges, did not know about Shri. Simon Sundarraj. Its great to hear that 2 of us(Mr. Kittu and Mr. Simon) went on to represent India in Olympics. Great indeed...
